About Tarot
The History of Tarot
Tarot cards first emerged in the mid-15th century in Europe, originally as playing cards used for games. The oldest surviving tarot cards are the mid-15th century sets that were made for the Visconti-Sforza family of Milan. The symbolic images on the cards evolved over time, and by the 18th century, they began to be used for divination and spiritual guidance.
Today, the most widely used tarot deck is the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, published in 1909. Created by Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, this deck established many of the standard imagery we associate with tarot today.
Structure of the Tarot
A traditional tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into two main categories:
- Major Arcana (22 cards): These cards represent life's spiritual and karmic lessons. They describe major principles, concepts, and milestones in our journey through life.
- Minor Arcana (56 cards): These cards reflect the trials and tribulations that we experience on a daily basis. They are divided into four suits: Wands (creativity and passion), Cups (emotions and relationships), Swords (intellect and conflict), and Pentacles (material aspects and career).
The Role of Tarot in Modern Times
While historically associated with fortune-telling, modern tarot is often used as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. The cards can help provide:
- Clarity in decision-making
- Insight into current situations
- Understanding of personal patterns and behaviors
- Guidance for personal development
- Different perspectives on life challenges
